Bug Description

When I try to import an eps I receive the following error

Error reading temporary SVG file: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'c:\\docume~1\\owner~\\locals~1\\temp\\tmpjfdcte.svg'

I assume that the temp file that inkscape is trying to create does not happen correctly. I have C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.63\lib in the system path. Also when I choose import I can see .eps files as a choice

running Win32 build 20316, I cannot reproduce this behaviour. I have gs8.61 installed.
- which version of Inkscape?
- does this happen also on File | Open or just on File | Import?
- do you get a preview window that says : "PDF Import Settings" and shows a preview?

sorry about that, I just read the title, so I know which version of Inkscape

I get  the command prompt momentarily and then I  get the inskcape error message followed by Inkscape has encountered and error and closes.  I have gs8.63 installed.

Edit: Inkscape failed to load the requested file. No I do not get a pdf preview.

This might be complicated by the fact that this is a two-stage import as far as I know, first conversion is ps to pdf and then second conversion is pdf to svg.
It might be worthwhile to try to trap the exit message in a DOS prompt using the methods outlined in http://kaioa.com/node/42 or http://kaioa.com/node/63

Sure I would do this but I cannot seem to get it to work.

probably the best way to do this is to download the file inkscapec from http://kaioa.com/node/63 , then save it into the directory C:\Program Files\Inkscape and then run it from a DOS prompt using the command inkscapec

I just upgraded from gs8.61 to gs8.63 and I now have the same error message as you have.
You might wish to consider reverting back to gs8.61, which I think is still available for Windows.
Alternatively, if I ever get 8.63 to work, I will post a response here.

okay, it appears that you must also have the directory :
C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.63\bin\ in the path, as well as the \lib directory.

or alternatively, I was able to get it to run by copying the file gswin32c.exe from the bin directory to the lib directory.

ignore the comment about reverting to 8.61

hth,
Alvin

OK putting the bin directory in the path makes this works.  Bug is fixed.

good to hear, I'm going to mark this as invalid since it appears to be a Ghostscript problem, not an Inkscape problem.

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → Invalid

I also couldn't open EPS files. I've got Inkscape 0.46 and GS 8.64. But when I tried to open EPS files, I get the message:

"Failed to load the requested file D:\_ALDI\Design\Resources\Icons\2009\file.eps"

I tried copying 'gswin32c.exe' C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.64\bin\ to C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.64\lib\, but it still doesn't work.

Where did I go wrong?

I would suggest trying a newer version of Inkscape, available at :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/inkscape
the latest version is 0.47pre3
