command line pdf,eps exports fail with --export-area-drawing

Bug Description
When trying to use --export-
I'm using Inkscape 0.46 on an Ubuntu 8.04 ( Hardy Heron ).
Some examples of exports that fail (circle.svg is a simple file with a filled circle):
inkscape -f circle.svg --export-
** (inkscape:7863): WARNING **: No export filename given and no filename hint. Nothing exported.
inkscape --export-
** (inkscape:7876): WARNING **: No export filename given and no filename hint. Nothing exported.
inkscape -f circle.svg -E circle.eps --export-
** (inkscape:7876): WARNING **: No export filename given and no filename hint. Nothing exported.
inkscape -f circle.svg -A circle.pdf --export-
** (inkscape:7876): WARNING **: No export filename given and no filename hint. Nothing exported.
However, png export with --export-

I see the same warning messages on Windows (console messages appear when I run inkscape from a cygwin shell).
However, the eps and pdf are still produced.
