Bug Description

I dragged the tools control bar up to where I had more space to make room for the document. When I switched tools, the tool control bar vanished.

This might have something to do with multiple monitors or with window managers and hiding the toolbar.

One question is what details can get this to happen on Linux.

Another question is if the floating toolbar actually went away, if it was merely hidden behind other windows, or if it moved screens/locations.

Hi,
I'm on Gentoo. I'm not running multiple monitors in xinerama or twinview. I do have however a TV-OUT but it was disabled at the time of testing this (if the TV is not plugged the server only creates one screen).
Maybe is WM thing, don't know. Currently it makes impossible to use Inkscape with a floating toolbar because it falls behind when you click on the canvas (it happens with the three toolbars).

1- Drag a toolbar so is not docked.
2- Click on the main window.
3- The undocked toolbar goes behind the main window.

It is hidden behind. At first I thought it disappeared because there was no taskbar button (which is fine).

Regards.

I don't know about Linux or how GTK interferes with Win32, but Win32 does have a topmost style that could be engaged for floating toolbars.

This has always been that way, both on Linux (KDE) and on Windows. I
have always assumed it is a GTK problem, but if we can do anything to
work around this it would be great.

Since this is a known problem and confirmed I am marking it as such. However, since this appears to be a problem not caused by Inkscape, I'm lowering Importance.

This problem is getting worse. Because we now have the Snap Controls toolbar, I wanted to tile those, but you can't move any toolbar without it vanishing. I am told GTK may be the problem.

I'm using one of the latest SVN releases and on Windows XP SP3 the toolbars don't vanish, they are just hidden behind the main window. The toolbars create its own taskbar button when dragged.

This makes working with floating bars impossible because the main window and toolbars are fighting for the focus.
