Memory is not cleared after file is closed

Bug Description

I have 2 GB RAM, and use big SVG files (up to about 1 GB of RAM used when opened by Inkscape). I have been noticing, through all Inkscapes releases, that when I'm working in many files at the same time (opened through the same Inkscape session, that is, File -> Open), after I close any of them, gkrellm doesn't show any decrease in memory use. That means that at some point, after opening/closing many files, I have to close all Inkscape windows and restart it, so that I can clear up the memory before I reach the maximum RAM usage and crash my system.

Inkscape should use only the amount of memory required by each file, and clear up the RAM that corresponds to a file that's being closed.

This sounds like annoying that could maye be fast to solve.
Do you still get this behavior on 0.46 and SVN build ?
Thanks

Hi nightrow,

It was some time I tested this, but it is in 0.46 for sure. Just check the memory usage when opening/closing a file repeatedly. To be honest I don't think it will be that easy to solve, but I'd be delighted if you'd like to have a go at it.

Related to Bug #1194871 "Huge Memory consumption by extension and pipe not closed".
Extensions use temporary SPDocuments that doesn't seem to be completely cleared.
