Bug Description
The postscript back end drops back to bitmaps more readily than the PDF back end at present.
It would be great if the PS back end code could be brought up to a comparable level with the PDF back end code.
I don't know whether it's gradients or opacity that cause it to drop back more readily.

PostScript does not support transparency and only PostScript level 3 supports gradients.
Using non opaque colors or using gradients when outputting PostScript level 2 will cause fallback images in cairo.
