Bug Description
Is it possible to have either a tool on the toolbar or a switch in the text menu that makes text objects snap to nearby paths or objects?
When activated you can drag text near objects or paths and the text will be attracted to the object/path in much the same way images are currently attracted to guides. The text should also be able to slide along or around the path/object as you move the mouse. Current text to path functionality doesn't allow you to drag the text to a desired point along a path apart from right, left, centre.
One possibility would be to make a switch that can be toggled for an individual object or path, ie; select the object/path and click magnetic, then drag the text along it to the desired point. May need to have three states - off (no magnetic for new or existing - existing bounce back like 'remove text from path' command), on (magnetic for new and existing), maintain/static (maintain current attraction, but no new).

When I say snap to, I mean bending to the same shape as the object or path, but being able to slide the text around the path or object using the mouse.
In terms of a trigger for this behaviour, it could also be a modifer key(s). For instance click on the path/object, hold Ctrl-Shift and then drag the text towards or away from the path/object.
