Rename Layer works on Parent object

Bug Description
User cannot rename the path if it's in a group and cannot rename group easily.
If the group needs to be renamed, the user requires to select any child object and select rename layer, which does not make sense as its not a layer and its an object. Second, the Rename command should rename the selected object and not the parent object.
This seems to be a functionality bug and not a feature request.
It would be great if a feature request can be linked to this and rename the object by pressing F2 or Double click on the object.
My primary reason for renaming objects is to put SVG IDs to the groups which can be used in a script form later to call names.
