Align and Distribute Tools have stopped responding to the mouse

Yesterday my align and distribute tools stopped working in the response to the mouse. They've stopped working period. I've checked the most likely causes. The align and distribute settings. And I've even uninstalled and reinstalled Inkscape. And the problem hasn't gone away. This is bad because I can't complete my vectors without these tools working. I'm really pissed off because of it.
