When dragging an object, objects behind him are erased

Bug Description

When dragging an object in Inkscape 0.92 and later, it often happens that all objects behind the one being dragged are erased by a white rectangle size of the bounding box. I noticed the bug on Windows 8 and 10 and all versions of Inkscape 0.92 on a variety computers (DELL, Lenovo, HP, ASUS...). The bug is not dependent on the graphics card, it occurs on a variety of Intel gfx cards and on nVidia cards alike. The bug appears regardless to whether the objects are transparent or blurred.

When zooming in / out of the picture, the missing parts are redrawn again.

Besides the above said, I noticed that rendering the image during drawing is notably slower in 0.92 than in 0.91. I use Inkscape to teach my students vector graphics, but for the time being, I need to keep the old version.

Hello,

sure, here it is. This is not an exception, though - the bug occurs in
various files and if you wish, I can send you more.

I'm not sure if I said that the bug isn't present in Inkscape 0.91 so it
must be something with the new rendering engine (or whatever :-))

BTW I just realized that by using "him", referring to the object in the
subject of the message, I demonstrated a surprising level of grammatical
stupidity :-)

All my best and thank you for your work on Inkscape,

Jan Flaska

thanks for the file.
I was not able to reproduce the problem on Windows 10, Inkscape 0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14).

I tried dragging various objects. In particular I dragged the object 'path4274-9-6-8' which appeared to be similar to your screenshot.

could you indicate which version of Inkscape (Help->About)

Yes, the object in question was path4274-9-6-8-5, a blurred ellipse. But the
bug is exactly the same with path4309 (the grey-black curve connecting the
base of the lamp with the lampshade) as well as number of other objects
which I'm just too lazy to list.

"could you indicate which version of Inkscape (Help->About) "

I tried all versions starting with 0.92.1 and every now and then I updated
Inkscape to a new version to see whether the bug is gone, but it's been
there ever since 0.92 which I downloaded the day it came out... The
screenshot is from a version that I downloaded from the Inkscape site
yesterday.

I uninstalled it already, seeing that the bug hasn't gone, replacing
Inkscape with v0.91.

It might seem like a very silly idea, but can it be somehow connected to the
Czech version of Inkscape and/or Windows?

It's really strange, because since 0.92 the bug has been consistent across
platforms, computers, Inkscape subversions, Windows versions, drawings and
users...

Best,

Jan

Hello again,

I was teaching my students to combine objects - while in 0.91 everything
worked fine, this is what it looked like in 0.92:

https://we.tl/t-4FuxDORnkv(https://we.tl/t-4FuxDORnkv)

There is a single object on the canvas, created by blending other objects
(two basic rectangles, one three-point star, one skewed rectangle). The
system in Windows 10 EDU Czech, Inkscape v 0.92.2.

I am not sure whether this behaviour is somehow connected to the bug I
reported previously or whether it has already been addressed in later
versions of Inkscape.

Best,

Jan

One more thing is probably worth noting: Inkscape (both 0.91 and 0.92) takes
up to 4 minutes to start. We are on LAN, with some network shares, but file
history is clean and number of files to remember in the history is set to
zero.

It's working, I've checked it.

Alright. I'm not sure how to describe the bug, though, so I'll probably just
give up reporting it and keep using 0.91 instead.

"3. it is always best to submit an svg file so that we can try to reproduce

Yeah, I know, I asked the student to send me the SVG file but he shut
Inkscape down before he saved the file.

OK, thank you.

Dear Alvin,

it seems you haven't downloaded the files from WeTransfer yet, depicting a
rendering and editing bug in Inkscape 0.92. Unfortunately, I find it too
difficult to describe (even in my mother tongue) to enter the bug into the
bugtracker - please could you have a look at the videos and perhaps analyze
what is happening?

Thank you,

Jan Flaska

Yes, I understand that, but, quite obviously, when I did that, you were not
able to reproduce the bug.
Hence I sent a video that shows how the bug looks on our computer. I really
do suspect it to be somehow local-specific, given that it doesn't occur on
EN Windows.

Jan

Hi Jan,

Like Alvin mentioned, we've migrated to gitlab.com for issues going forward, and I too would encourage filing separate bug reports per distinct issue.

I am not sure what is causing the canvas refresh problem, although the renderer didn't change significantly between 0.91 and 0.92. The program shouldn't be taking 4 minutes to load up, so that makes me wonder if there is some other condition unique to your systems that might be involved.

Since we're not able to reproduce this issue so far, and since we're migrating to gitlab I'm going to close this issue out. Please feel free to file new bugs about the issues you're seeing at http://inkscape.org/report.
