"Break path" does nothing

Bug Description

1. Draw a path with multiple nodes.
2. Click on the "Edit paths by nodes" tool.
3. Click on the node of the path at which you want to break it.
4. Click on the "Break path at selected nodes" button.

The path remains connected! At first I thought it was grouped, but ungrouping it didn't change anything.

The "Edit" menu shows "Undo: Break nodes", which means Inkscape did something.

I use "Inkscape 0.92.2 5c3e80d, 2017-08-06" on macOS Mojave.

unfortunately I do not have 0.92.2 available for testing.

Please ensure to de-select the split nodes after the operation, then drag on a node. Initially both nodes are selected and will move in unison.

Your comment made me realize my misunderstanding! You said drag on a *node* ! Then the path is separated into two segments!

But, it's still one object! --- My misunderstanding was that the "Break nodes" function would separate the path into multiple objects.

Now, how can one do that, to split a path into two separate objects?

there is a menu item: Path->Break Apart which will do that

Thanks! But --- Sorry I know this is not a help forum --- I'm not sure if that is what I'm looking for.

1. Draw a closed path.
2. Select two of the nodes of the path.
3. "Break Apart" will split the path into two separate path objects.

Or,

1. Draw an open path.
2. Select one of the nodes o the path.
3. "Break Apart" will split the path into two separate path objects.

These are what I wanted to accomplish.

I'm not sure how the existing "Path -> Break Apart" works in this way.

Should I submit a "feature request"?

it is a two step operation:
- the first step "Break nodes" will break a path into two segments which can be edited independently while still being part of the same "object". This object will still have a single bounding box which will be visible when you select it.
- the second step "Break Apart" will break this object into two objects. Each object will have a separate bounding box.

A path object can have any number of open segments...

The Paths pages of the manual are very useful. Also related are the entries therein for (boolean) path-operations.

To accomplish both the node operation and the path operation with one trigger, it might be possible to create an "extension" (a type of Inkscape plug-in). A request for an extension or help in creating one can stay here and/or at the community forum.
