Bug Description

When I used to use illustrator, I would frequently drill down through a document by selecting the top object, locking it, and proceeding down until I got to the level I wanted, then unlocking all to continue editing. Unless I missed something, this is not possible in inkscape. A specific instance is when you have a word behind itself with the stroke heavy for a halo effect. selecting the bottom one is not easy currently. the only work around I found was to use the interface provided by the menu>object>objects... which should be merged with the layers palette and anything that pops up one of those interface panes should all be in one menu for discoverability, but all that is a matter for another wishlist item. Overall though, bang up job guys, thank you for all of your hard work in the form of inkscape.
