Bug Description

It would be rather neat to have a .ico export in inkscape. It would add to its large amount of features :)

Good idea GdaTerry!
Thank you for your input to make inkscape better!
Ico-files are usable as favicon to give your homepage a brand/sign. This would be a valuable addition to Inkscape.

Have code in my sand box that should do this with a little tweaking.

Doing this kind of things with extensions would be easier if there were RAW export.

I would really love this too. Web favicons are the least important reason for this feature; png is way better. I would use it for creating multi-resolution windows icons for general customization, while others would like it to make icons for their programs and such. Otherwise I'll have to export my svg at various resolutions and open and set them up in Gimp.

A very, VERY neat ability would be if for images that will be in the same form in the icon at every resolution, by exporting, it automatically packages the one target area of the svg to the ico in all the major resolutions (128x, 64x, 48x, 32x, and 16x16).

Anyway, here's a cool guide about how Gimp handles exporting to multi-res icons:

I don't want to use GIMP (it blows in my opinion). I'd love for this feature to be added to Inkscape. Please try.

@Daghead: This is probably not the place to post this, but do you mean to say that png can be used to create icons?

Just registered for this feature. I'd also note, that the export should also be accessible via the Icon Dialog.

Forgot to mention, that there should also be the possibility to select which icon sizes you want to export, because e. g. for favicons you normally don't need an 256x256 pixels image.
