this appears to be a legacy file. Did you receive a dialog window with the heading "Convert legacy Inkscape file"?

I'm the 'Linux' from the above report. First, memory usage soars, and then, after a couple of minutes, Inkscape loads half the file... Then it says 'Window not responding', then just closes. After this, I wasn't able to use the cursor of my mouse (clicking works, cursor doesn't appear, also cannot type). Switching VT didn't help, I never got a command prompt. Needed to hard-reset computer to get a normal behaviour again. After removing the 'sand' bitmap, the drawing worked again. 'Clean up document' did not remove unused patterns.

(Cursor as in 'text cursor')

Reproduced crash/freeze on Win 8.1-64bit Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06). As noted above, removal of the bitmap allows the file to open.

No crash/freeze on WinXP-32bit Inkscape 0.91 r13725

„Did you receive a dialog window with

I only recieved a window for convertion into the new standard of 0.92.2. No window whatever in 0.91.

Martin.

I located the single object using the sand bitmap in a pattern (rect11211), and changed its fill to solid. After the change, cleaning the document removed ~376 unused defs.

File opens without freeze, prompt for dpi change appears.

Tested another legacy document with sand pattern fill; opened without issue in Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), Win 8.1-64bit.

I just wonder, why there is a sand pattern in this document. There
should be only plain colours. I didn´t put any special pattern in this
drawing!
