Bug Description

in many cases it would be very helpful to place an object by simply setting it's center coordinates.
I don't know about any efficient way in Inkscape to do that without using guides or helper objects which need to be deleted afterwards.
It seems that Inkscape ONLY(?) allows the lower left corner as reference point for coordinates.

It would be nice if this could be expanded to the center, all corners and maybe even side midpoints.

e.g. a setting in Preferences like you can choose between "visual" or "geometric" bounding box.

This issue has been slowing my work with Inkscape down for quite a time now.

I don't think this is really a duplicate of #170674, since the latter asks for completely free selection of reference point while this request asks for just selecting one of 5 (or possibly 9) pre-defined positions. Having free reference point doesn't make working with center-relative position any easier.

Also, while speaking of reference points, Inkscape is really inconsistent in this area:
- in the "select and transform" toolbar, the position is relative to the lower-left corner; changing the size will maintain this corner (which is consistent with Inkscape coordinate system)
- position of a group of nodes in "edit paths by nodes" toolbar is relative to the group center
- changing object size in Object/Transform tool window maintains object's bounding box center (which is what many people want - and which is currently my favorite way of bypassing Inkscape's coordinate system).
- changing the height of a rectangle in rectangle toolbar maintains top-left corner (which is consistent with SVG coordinate system; only works with rectangles).

The preferred way of handling this would be adding a dropdown menu to the select/transform and path edit toolbars that would allow selection of any of the 9 points (center, cordners and mid-edges). The dropdown should be located next to the position/size boxes, perhaps following the unit selector.

Actually, this bug is not a duplicate of #170674, but #170815:
