Bug Description

ability to select the embedded raster image and right mouseclick it to have
an option of 'edit in the gimp'
then when editing is done, you save in the gimp - close and the raster
graphic is updated in the inkscape canvas.

steps, or use case
desired functionality start with step 5

1. create new drawing in incase
2. realize a raster graphic is needed to augment the drawing.
3. import the raster graphic and use the extension to embed the
graphic into the canvas.
4. after further work on the canvas you would like the raster to be
modified some to better mesh with the rest of the inkscape created
drawing.
5. right mouse click on the raster graphic, the context menu has an option
to 'edit in gimp'
6. gimp opens with the raster image opening
7. complete desired edits and touches to the raster image
8. save
9. close gimp
10. inkscape is now in focus and the image has been updated in inkscape to
reflect the edits done in steps 6-8

The idea for this functionality has been in my head for a while, but really
came to a point when using f-spot and discovered this functionality. In
there you can open in gimp to do more advanced edits when you save it
f-spot is updated with the new image (granted it will create a new version
and does version control, though that would not be needed in inkscape -
only the edits are needed to be committed to the oritional photo in the
canvas.)

step one above is supposed to read

1. create new drawing in inkscape

I apologize for the perceived insensitivity

I would like to select an editor apart from gimp, like just show inkscape
the path to the app to run to edit the file.

And maybe something like right click > edit externally(rather than edit in
gimp), then inkscape exports it to a temp folder, opens the editor you want
and then you edit it and press save and save it in the format inkscape
exported it as in the same folder with the same name, then go back to
inscape and click editing complete or refresh or something

I agree that from an advanced users perspective it would be good to choose
your editor - and that should definately be an option somewhere, but as far
as the default - it should 'just work' with an editor, perhaps in the
building process it could check your system for gnome > gimp, or kde >
whateverkdeuses. and that is the one that will be there.

How do you think about the support for more general document exchange
techniques?

@Elfring: a no-no for both of them, sorry. OLE is a Windows-only technology and Bonobo is just outdated.

If you are really looking for that day you might be nicely surprised to have missed it. It was done back in May 2008 :)))
