1-click 3D (pseudo 3D button/box)

Can there be a feature which lets you create 3-D like objects out of
existing objects by dragging the inner and outer boarders and automatically
applying lighting? To create images such as in the file I'm uploading.

Screenshots or mockups of what you mean might be helpful too.
Also if you can describe the underlying problem you are trying to solve
perhaps we can suggest a workaround.

Although developers do make great efforts to familiarise themselves with
other relevant software it is not always practical to keep up to date with
the latest expensive proprietary software, requiring the use of
proproprietary operating systems.

This 3D drawing you describe sounds a lot like the button tool in Xara
the developer who created the extrude extension might be interested to
adapt his work to provide a result like your example shows

You can do this quickly (enough) by making a clone on top of the original
and using dynamic offset. Of course you'll have to add the facets' edges
yourself, but its better than drawing the whole inner part from scratch.
