we got some enthusiasm for better compatibility

I have addresed bulias request to also change the Add layer
dialog title, albeit reluctantly as I do not wish to more
and more preconditions added to what should be a simple
change. patch first ask questions later?
others are welcome to submit more complicated patches

please apply soon.

I don't understand your comment Alan. Is this supposed to be
applied, or is the author to change something?

I commented to early, the discussion became more critical of
the proposed change.
I changed the patch, the attachment labelled "menu, tooltip,
and dialog title. 3rd times a charm" includes the change
requested by bulia, to also cover the Add Layer dialog title.

bulia please properly explain your reason for closing this.
I updated the patch to cover your request.

I have seen no effort to provide a counter patch or bug
report filed against gimp. people have claimed they care
about better consistency and unless someone does something
in the direction of gimp then it is unfair to reject my
effort to improve inkscape so quickly.

What is being done to improve consistency with the GNU Image Manipulation
program?
What can I do to make this patch more acceptable?

I would be unhappy closing this issue unless there was some progress one
way or the other towards making the two applications more consistent. I
would not like to see intertia used as an excuse again, Inkscape is not
Sodipodi. I have made an effort to improve things and it is being blocked
- patch first ask questions later not happening - with no counter proposals
to improve the situation.

Bulia and Alan, please find an acceptable compromise and resolution on
this patch. The issue seems to be that Inkscape and Gimp differ in
terminology, which is clearly a legitimate issue.

If my understanding is correct, it is acceptable for either inkscape or
gimp to change. IIRC, Bulia had excellent reasoning for why 'Add Layer' is
a superior naming convention. Alan, since you have feet in both Inkscape
and Gimp communities, please act as liaison between Bulia and the
appropriate person in the Gimp community to find a concensus on layer
command names.

Also please understand that 'patch first, discuss later' is a philosophy,
not something to be taken literally. It means, "Understand the root
issue and provide a solution, and avoid causing dissent." In this case,
ironically, the fix in this case is to open a discussion between Gimp and
Inkscape about standards with naming conventions, not a patch. ;-)

Please realize that there are four potential outcomes to this: Inkscape
change to conform to Gimp, Gimp change to conform to Inkscape, both change
to some new common standard, or neither change and agree to differ. The
forth option will be the simplest and thus is the most likely, but also the
least desireable. The third is probably the most realistic option, but
will involve the most work (and much diplomacy) to achieve concensus.

Since it will take extra effort to achieve concensus, it would be
worthwhile to expand this to cover other menu differences between Inkscape
and Gimp. Please compile a listing of menu options that differ between the
two programs but that perform the same action. Do not include any
suggestions which one is better; simply itemize the discrepancy. Then find
a Gimp developer who is interested in resolving the discrepancy, and put
him/her together with Bulia to discuss them; they can then go through the
list and discuss which way to change, or to remain different, and provide
an explanation as to why.

That is no longer the case, Yosh banned me (although he may claim
otherwise).

The request might be better received coming from someone else.

I would also *strongly* prefer if Inkscape changed and also adopted the
keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N for New Layer.

I will endevour to review other areas with potential to improve
consistency.
moving this out of the patch tracker and into Requests for Enhancement.

Ehm, I agree with Alan, that it would make a lot of sense to have the same
keyboard shortcut as gimp. The exact naming on the other hand is completely
irrelevant, I think. A user will not be confused if one is called Add Layer
and the other New Layer. Really, I don't think I would have noticed.
So following Bulia's reasoning about Verbs and Alan's reasoning about the
keyboard shortcut: Can't we just call it Create New Layer?

The most important thing is the keyboard shortcut, the naming seems pretty clear to me either way.
