Bug Description

If the dpi is managed in document :

* The document change from pixels to mm/inch would be
be more coherent.
* picture import will keep the good size for printing,
png export, etc...
* picture export will have a default value that could
be overriden as today.

The default value could be get from the system ?

You are talking two things here, aren't you?

Isn't it that you want to get away from the 90dpi standard screen
resolution and base the image export and the 100% zoomlevel on the acutal
screen resolution?

A change from pixels to mm/inch doesn't make sense, usually, does it?

For picture import you usually want 200 or 300 dpi, when you are going for
print. That is something that could be an import option, because resizing
the picture on canvas, what you usually want to do, will chang the
resolution.

The dpi of the document could vary depending on print output, could be 300
dpi for standard printing, but could be less (for posters) or more for
specific printings.

changing format from pixel to mm or inch, is for example for conversion
from camera pictures size to printing size or from scaner to web or video
(PAL/HDTV...)

Huh? Seriously, this cannot be the point. I can print a 100dpi image at
300dpi and a 300pdi image at 100dpi.
Basically in print I care about sufficient resolution and about the width
and height I need.

Basically, the point is: an image always has a specific width and height
in pixels... e.g. 2400*1800 or the such. My camera always says they were 70
dpi, which is bugus, because when I print them only 2.4cm*1.6cm the
resolution obviously is _a lot_ higher.

sorry, got to run, can't add more right now.

with 0.92 the exported dpi changed to 96 from 90. (to match CSS compatibility). If the dpi were saved per document then the 0.92 user could override it in their legacy svg files to maintain the 90dpi for their older files. This would be especially helpful for people using inkscape svgs in plotters - CAD software that expects 90dpi.
