Please support non-square pixels in bitmaps

Bug Description

There are still some devices and media, particularly in
digital video, that use non-square pixels. Currently
Inkscape has horizontal and vertical resolution
settings for export, but the vertical resolution
setting is tied to the horizontal. Please allow them to
be set independently, even though they should be tied
by default.

Inkscape is vector not pixel based, and currently only the
one raster file format is offered for export (only one
natively, others are through extensions) so this seems a bit
beyond the normal scope of inkscape. However if a developer
were to submit patches there would be a much better chance
of the feature being accepted.

most likely you would be expected to export the files and
post process them in some other applications for the non
square pixels you need.
if you could describe a workaround it might be useful to
other users

I find your comments patronising and entirely unhelpful. The
separate resolution fields in the export dialog are
presumably present because this was recognised as being a
worthwhile feature even if it is not yet implemented. I have
previously spoken to other Inkscape developers (I can't
remember who right now) who indicated that they do intend to
implement this but asked me to file this request to ensure
it's not forgotten.

That is unfortunate. It was not my intention to patronise
but I have know way of knowing your past experience. It is
difficult to treat every question with the same level of
politeness as if it were asked be someone new to the project
but even when I do make the effort there will always be the
risk of misunderstanding. It is necessary to make it clear
that with open source software feature requests can often
take a very long time to get implemented.

If the user interface is there (especially in a release
version) and it doesn't work that is bug, but unlike other
projects the Inkscape developers tend to reserve the term
bug for more severe cases such as crashers. It is a
reasonable presumption that someone intends to either fix
that soon or remove it until they do have time to work on
it. There really shouldn't be non-functional user interface
elements.
(I suspect we might be getting caught in the strange
confusions and compromises between resolution and sizing,
the feature might actually work just not in the expected
way. I'd rather not get into the details of it though.)

> I have previously spoken to other Inkscape developers

You didn't mention it so I had no way of knowing. There are
many reports filed and yours had not yet received an answer.
I think it is important to provide you with some kind of
response to people who maek the effort to report bugs or
requests, especially those who make the effort to login and
create an account. There is also a need reinforce the idea
that Inkscape is primarly an SVG Editor so other
enhancements might not be lucky enough to receive the same
level of attention, but in your case if there is a developer
already interested in working on it you may be lucky.

Alan, why couldn't you just run Inkscape and open the Export
dialog to see that the box for setting vertical resolution
is already there, just disabled? Exactly like the submitter
reports? One actual run of the program and reporting the
results here would do MUCH more good to the project than
long speculative comments. Please try to be factual and
brief when reviewing bugs.

bulia now you are using the tracker for discussions which
doesn't help the user either. I'll try to keep my response
here brief.

the extremely low barrier for filling the tracker with
reports means most users dont have realistic expectations
about what features are likely to be implemented. womble2
is well informed but as I said before there was no way for
me to know that and his report had not received any response.

if more people were involved in keeping the tracker up to
date and all users actually got a timely response I would
apply my time elsewhere.
you are welcome to encourage other people to spend more time
checking through the tracker.
