Bug Description

To give users better feedback when performing
time-intensive operations, being able to display a
progress bar within the status bar, as well as
switching the mouse pointer to a busy/wait pointer,
would be helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to suggest ways to improve Inkscape.

Please help us by checking the latest version of Inkscape to make
sure this feature has not already been added and there are no
duplicate requests for this feature.

A similar request already exists for tracing which can be a
particularly time consuming operation.
If I have time to hunt down the duplicate I'll close this
request, your help would be appreciated.

Inkscape should definately show progress bars for long
operations.

I would go so far as to call this a bug. Inkscape has just
been unresponsive for about 2 minutes trying to unlink about
2000 clones. It's not tolerable for the UI to freeze without
feedback for that long.

The original request is #1066386:

Something tied into the API used to display messages in
the status bar would be good; that way, the status bar can
easily be turned on during long operations like tracing,
unlinking, or simplification, and then be turned off with
another call used to display some text in the status bar
area.

This is the above mentioned tracing bug (in launchpad): https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170456

Since progress bar for all time-intensive operations is a more general term than progress bar for Tracing only, should the tracing progress bar bug be closed and keep this general one open?

btw Id love to have progress bar too

I'll add my voice to the chorus - a Progress bar for time-intensive operations would be a real plus.
And I'd also add a "Nooooo - stop - cancel" Keyboard command or button to abort things that are taking too long.

Thanks :)

There is already a progress bar for exporting bitmaps - which would be perfect.

One time-intensive operation on some SVG is the Alt+Left Mouse drag which is used to select all objects under a path. It seems like once the mouse released all objects are analysed to know which one is under the path, which can be time consuming on large SVGs. The progress bar can be represented by the percentage of objects analysed.
