LAYERS: Duplicate Layer function in menu

This is a trivial feature addition, but one should be
able to select from the menu, "DUPLICATE LAYER" and
then the current working layer is duplicated saying
something like "CURRENT LAYER COPY" where the original
layer is "CURRENT LAYER"

I think this should go after add layer but before
rename layer in the menu.

This is a feature that I would really like to see as well. I
need to use it quite often. I came here to request this
feature but after finding that it has already been
requested, I am adding my vote.

this has been requested for the layers dialog too but there is no need to
keep seperate reports for both. this wouldn't even need a menu item
(although it would probably be a good idea), the important part is creating
a verb and the necessary underlying infrastructure.

this would be a nice little improvement that would make inkscape more
consistent with other applications that offers layers like the GNU Image
Manipulation program.

might be a good small project to get outside developers involved

The whole Layers menu should be a flyout menu of the Layers Palette. It could be easily done in the Layers Palette, say by Ctrl-dragging it onto the New Layer button.

...or just by dragging it onto the New Layer button, as in illustrator, no modifier key needed. In most applications, Shift selects a range from a list, and Ctrl multiple items.
