Bug Description

2003 13" macbook pro, Mac OS 10.12.6
Inkscape version 0.92.2

Steps;
In document properties, the 'display units' don't appear to save. If i change it to cm, close the dialogue, choose the line tool for example, at the bottom of the screen it still shows the geometry in px. If you go back to document properties, its returned to px.

Thanks,
t..

In 0.92.2, the document properties dialog calls these 'display units' - but this is what you're referring to, right?

FWIW, for me on Linux Mint 18, switching the display units works as expected.

Thanks Hachmann,
Yes, it’s the display units that i was referring to. I’ve updated the bug description now.
Good to hear that it’s ok with Linux.

I am currently using Inkscape 0.92.1 r15371 on Linux Debian 9 and I can confirm that this bug is also present on linux.

I cannot change the display unit to anything else than pixel. Changing it makes it remain as pixel, and saving it in a default.svg does not change the ruler to anything else than pixels when the defualt file is loaded.

This bug did not exist in older versions (like 0.7,0.8) of inkscape.

could you attach the default file you are using? This would normally be called default.svg in the folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\share\templates\default.svg

~/.config/Inkscape/templates/default.svg for a custom default.svg on Linux.

For the default default.svg, it would be:

/usr/share/inkscape/templates/default.svg

Hi Hachmann,
I've attached the default.svg.

I think it has to do with the recent conversion to 96 dpi. There's been a
some plugins with related problems.

which are caused by lack of a viewbox in legacy files

Cheers.
I assume it has something to do with the change from 90 to 96 dpi. Have you
tried both?
So you can use the beizer / line tool, and set the drawing units to cm?

it is not likely that it is related to the change from 90 to 96 dpi. However it is quite likely that it is related to the introduction of the viewbox, which was introduced at the same time, if I recall. svg files with no viewbox will behave exactly as you have described, as in the previous bug reports in comment 9.

Could you try an experiment? If you have a file that is behaving in this way, could you save it under a new name and attach it here? Or, alternatively, open the menu item Edit->XML editor in Inkscape and inspect the root element that says <svg:svg> to see if there is a viewbox. It should look something like this:

   width="210mm"
   height="297mm"
   viewBox="0 0 744.09448819 1052.3622047"

Apologies Alvin, I sent you the 0.91 version that doesn't have the issue...

I uninstalled the 0.92 version, and don't have the install file anymore. It
appears that they've rolled the release of the mac version back to 0.91.
So, i can't clarify the issue i'm sorry. There was someone else who had the
same issue with the linux version, maybe they could try what you've
suggested?

Cheers,

Both linked issues describe the same problem. A workaround is available at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1671691/comments/7

We should really link all these duplicates together...
