Import DWG

Bug Description

DWG-importing would be great to enable simple
CAD-based modifications on Linux/*BSD.

PythonCAD is working on a implementation, so
there should be a OSS-base somewhere
outside of OpenDWG.
DXF shouldn't be too hard either. DWG-export
would be totally cool, but less needed then
import.

DWG is a very usefull file format. So is DXF. Implementing
import/export ability would be one of the major steps for
Inkscape to acquire the interoperability that professional
designers require.

There was a Google summer of code project working on this
I'm not sure a request is needed and there may already be
more than one open

help checking for duplicates would be appreciated

It will not be possible to support DWG import or export in the near future in any open source project. See the DWG article on wikipedia for details.

DWG support would be difficult because it is a binary format. DXF is easier and is currently supported in the development version.
I am going to tentatively mark this as Will Not Fix or something like that. If there is any objection to this, please feel free to re-open the report.

Reverting the bug status to 'Confirmed' because Inkscape (current stable version 0.48) does not support the DWG file format, and 'Won't fix' might be debatable - there are efforts ongoing to create open-source libraries implementing DWG support, e.g.

LibreDWG - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation:
«GNU LibreDWG is a free C library to handle DWG files. It aims to be a free replacement for the OpenDWG libraries. DWG is the native file format of AutoCAD.»
