Isometric stencils

Bug Description

These are drawing shapes like prisims, cylinders, and
pipelines that work on an isometric grid. Sizing and
snap connection points would be useful to be able to
hook them together.

See http://www.geocities.com/piping_isometrics/

It would also be nice to have a way for users to define
new kinds of stencils (even if it requires hand-editing
xml...)

You mean like adding Dia/Visio components to Inkscape?

Please use Dia

I'm not closing this report yet but I do not think it is
appropriate at this time to request very specific techincal
drawing features when Inkscape is more about Artists and
graphic designers.

Perhaps in a year or two this request will be appropriate as
the developers look to expand.

how about creating those shapes as separate images and
submit them to the Open Clip Art Library? with the upcoming
clipart browser will be easy to insert them in a document

nicu these shapes are way more complicated than that, they
are more like new tools. you would need to get a copy of
Visio to see how exactly they work but using flat SVG
wouldn't really give you as much flexibility.

Dia has an Isometric Grid and Inkscape does not and this is
more about techincal drawing than art so it is not a good
idea to make this functionality a priority for inkscape when
Dia is could do it better.

(Plugging in custom drawing tools is a whole other horribly
complex issue I intend to bring up later on the mailing
lists when I have more information about how Macromedia do it.)

I don't have Visio, but I had a look in Dia at the "Map,
Isometric" set look very similar to what the original poster
asked and the images in this set are SVG (with connectors added)

who do you think created the Map Isometric shapes for Dia? :)
Sure you can create a reasonable approxiamation using flat
SVG but the piping isometrics are more flexible like proper
tools (think of the difference between a flat precreated SVG
image of a cube and a drawing tool for creating a cube with
proper handles and sliders. The piping isometrics have
extra adjustment handles built in which make them way more
flexible.)

Originator: NO

Support for the notion of stencils or shapes is more likely to improve but
someone making a specific stencil set is not very likely.

Not sure I particulary want to leave this open. Someone claiming this
report might discourage me from closing it.

This feature would be really useful to have.

Please take me off this Inkscape big report email chain, I have been getting these emails for like 3 years and I don’t use Inkscape anymore
