linked offset path always closed

Bug Description

When you create a linked offset object from a path
the new object will be a closed path (line drawn from
last node to first node) even if the source path was open.

happens in version 0.39 win32 and linux

I'm not sure this is fixable, because it may be non-trivial
to find out which segments of the offset path must be moveto
instead of lineto. But if it's possible, it would be nice.

This Bug is still reproducible in the SVN version of Inkscape, December 2007.
I used the windows autobuild built on decemeber 1 2007.

IMO, this bug can be considered as a feature. Some awesome graphic can be created with the use of this bug. Example attached.

Please consider backward compatibility if someone is going to fix this bug. Thanks.

Gaps are usually caused by tolerance issues. These tend to occur if a polyline contains arc segments with very large radii as is here the case.

A potential solution (other than turning off clipping) might be to straighten all arc segments into line segments using Draw > Polyline > Arc to Line Segments.
