Bug Description

import and export of pdf-files is very important!

you can print or export files to pdf from everey prog..
on this way you could import and arrange it in sodipodi

KIDPROTO: I think we all know that PDF import/export
support are SUPER IMPORTANT. It might even be more
important than EPS/AI import/export....

Modern AI (Adobe Illustrator) Documents are in fact PDF
(Portable Document Format).
If we have good support for PDF import we basically get AI
for free.

There is another Ehancement requesting the Keyboard
Shortcuts Document as PDF. I pointed out that if Inkscape
were to add support for Gnome-Print it would get PDF export
for free. (Gnome-Print itself has no Gnome dependancies
anymore but gnome-print-ui still has one or two small
dependancies left)

Found out more,
Inkscape can be compiled with Gnome-Print
by using the configure option
--with-gnome-print

PDF export sorted!

Gnome-print no longer has any Gnome dependancies although
Gnome-Print-UI does still have one or two so it might even
be a suitable solution for Windows as well.

PDF exports is really what is missing to inkscape, from our
point of view, to stop using Ai in our company and switch to
inkscape.

With documents with transparency, there is no way to get a
suitable pdf.
We tried to print on Adobe PDF Creator, or other pdf
"printer" but when inkscape prints, it converts document to
bitmap instead of sending it as vector objects, so the
resulting pdf if really low quality, not suitable for
printing or anything else...

August 2006, Inkscape's a great app - but still no PDF
import facility!

It's a major flaw in the current feature set.

Any idea when PDF import will be realized?

Inkscape does now support several forms of PDF export
including the Cairo PDF engine which is being worked on.

Specific bugs or feature requests should probably be filed
against the different PDF export engines and this bug report
closed as the standard gets to a reasonably high level.
leaving open for now though.

It would be very nice to be capable of generating a paged pdf document, by
considering the visible layers.
