Same for me. Mac OSX 10.4.10 on a G4 iMac. Double-click to run Inkscape.
It starts X11, but Inkscape starts and stops afterwards.
Inkscape does NOT open. Unable to run program. It runs on my G5 iMac
though.

Hi,

Could you:
- quit X11 and Inkscape
- open Console.app (in Utilities), look for console.log in it and display
it (logs button in the toolbar)
- clear the log (brush button in the toolbar)
- Open Inkscape and look for messages in console.log
- copy paste the messages in here.

Thanks in advance.

I encountered what I think is the same problem Naguiar has (open Inkscape;
X11 opens, Inkscape closes, right?) on my friend's MacBook. I'll try the
Console solution and tell you the results.

On OS 10.4.10, When I run it, the System.log says it is missing
libXinerama.dynlib.

I go to http://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.5.0/binaries/Darwin-ppc-5.x,
download Xbin.tgz, unpack it and place libXinerama.1.0.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/, create symlinks libXinerama.1.0.dylib to libXinerama.dylib
and libXinerama.1.dylib, then I run inkscape and I have a symbol missing in
the .so:

Link (dyld) error:

Symbol not found: _FT_Get_BDF_Property
  Referenced from:
/Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib
  Expected in: /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib

So I guess my X11 is out of sync with what inkscape is compiled with, ug.
What do I do now?

Ok there are two problems here, both of them being reported very often
these days. I'll try and do what I can. I know where the libXinerama issue
comes from but it's still strange. About Inkscape which keeps asking for
X11 while X11 is there, this is a more serious issue.
More info later today or this week end. Uping the priority here.

On my friend's MacBook, I (1) start Inkscape (2) Inkscape opens (3)
followed by X11. Then, (4) Inkscape quits. Next (5), X11 may stay open,
quit, or quit with a "X11 quit unepectedly" error message. This is when it
quit without a messge:

tried to leave everything around it intact. Anyway, I went through the path
specified in the last line and found no matching log file. (It might be
invisible or something; I don't think so.) None of the logs mentioned
Inkscape, but tone had X11 (which i intalled only for Inkscape, and
recently, too). Here is Exited process.crash.log :

After careful review of all possible setups, it appears that a correct
configuration of the machine Inkscape is run on shold solve the problem.
The recommendations are:
- to update to the latest version of Inkscape:
0.45.1 is to be found here
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438&package_id=99112
or a development version after 2007-03-21 there
http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?C=M;O=D
- to use the latest version of X11
found on Tiger DVD 1 for Tiger users: scroll down the DVD window,
double clic "Optional Installs", go through the license agreement and
destination selection. On the "Custom install" page select Applications>X11
and deselect everything else, hit Install. You're done.
found on Apple website for Panther users:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html
With this setup, the issue should really be solved. Please report back
here if everthing runs smoothly (or not). Cheers,

JiHO

Further info on the second to last comment: the message
"/usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture" makes
me think that you installed X11 PPC on a MacBook. You need X11 for intel,
on OS X install disc. see previous comment for detailed explanations.

But I have the latest xfree86 installed from my installation CD and it
still doesn't work. I'm going to have to give up on the .dmg and compile
the source. I got an old version working this way, I guess I'll have to do
it again. Thanks anyway. What a bummer.

to nixnixnix: if you have X11 installed from your Tiger DVD you should
have libXinerama. Could you check the output of:
ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/libXine*
What is strange is that you tried to install it from the XFree
distribution, meaning that you did not have it in the first place. However,
every person I asked had it if they installed X11. Maybe you can try
reinstalling X11 from Apple. I have added a FAQ about this recently:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#I.27ve_installed_X11_on_OS_X_but_Inkscape_keeps_asking_for_it
Compiling from source may help you on this problem (basically if Inkscape
is not compiled against libXinerama it won't ask for it afterwards) but
there must be a simpler way to solve the problem.
