I think that the options that JadeMatrix was mentioning (previous post, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168648/comments/38) is really a necessity. As notebooks grow more powerful, it will be possible to use inkscape on them. Of course, you can undock the vertical toolbar to make inkscape window resize nicely (but the toolbar itself will not resize, anyway).
I had the same problem on Ubuntu 9.04, and the "small icons" trick that everybody is mentioning worked fine, but I've a 13.3 inches screen. What about 9 inches?
