Bug Description

Version 0.44 in WinXP

Any object I select displays size as 100% (when I
switch to % on the toolbar). No matter what I do to
the object, the size is always reported as 100%.

This is a particular problem with bitmaps. I create a
bitmap at a certain size and resolution in the GIMP
and I would like it to be represented at 100% size in
inkscape on my page (it would be great if it would
import - by default - at the correct size and
resolution?)

I am trying to use open source software to teach my
students about the difference between vector and
raster images, when to use each one and how to combine
both for a printed project - it's getting tricky.

Good luck!

I think this could be clarified, at least in version 0.45.1 (winXP) the
image is inserted using its dimensions (in pixels).

Eg a 300 x 300 pixel image with resolution at 72 dpi would be imported as
a 300 x300 pixel square, similarly a 300 x 300 pixel image with resolution
of 300 dpi would be imported as a 300 x 300 pixel square.

It would be useful if Inkscape would have an option to take into account
the "print dimensions" of a particular image, so that a 300 x 300 pixel
image with x & y resolution of 300 dpi, would be displayed as a 1 inch
square.

Similarly a 300 x300 pixel image with print dimensions of 0.5 inches,
would be inserted as a 0.5 inch x 0.5 inch image, with resolution of 600
dpi.

While I appreciate inkscape is not a raster editor a couple of minor
additions could solve this. For instance it would be useful to be able to
interrogate the "original image properties" for the "x" and "y" image
dimensions, as well as "print dimensions", in addition to the "displayed x
and y dimensions" which inkscape currently caters for.

Perhaps these additional values could be incorporated into the image
properties box?

As a comparison "illustrator" inserts an image by its "print dimensions",
and has a selection info box that displays the following information:

Linked Images: C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\300x300x300dpi.jpg
Type: RGB
Bits per Pixel: 24
Channels: 3
Size: 263K, 300 by 300 pixels
Dimensions: 72 by 72 points
Resolution: 300 by 300 pixels per inch

And therefore displays the above image at size of 1 inch x 1 inch on a
72dpi screen

These additions may also allow you to reset an image to its original size,
for instance at a later date, which is useful if it has been resized
disproportionally. Currently to get an image back to its original
dimensions you have to replace it, or look up the values in an external
editor and manually re-enter them.
These changes would make a usual addition to dealing with raster images in
inkscape.
