Vertical Japanese text renders incorrectly.

Bug Description

The attached SVG file contains a single string on a
blank canvas. The string is three characters long: い
わて. As you can see, when oriented vertically, there
is a mountain of space between each character. Oddly,
this extra space appears neither before the first nor
after the last character; it's only in between them.
Please help!

I can confirm this in 0.43. However it seems to be fixed in
the latest nightly builds.

I think SourceForge really ought to e-mail me when a bug
gets assigned to me.

It looks OKish to me (although I've a feeling it's in
completely the wrong place), however the support for
vertical text is really rubbish and I wouldn't be surprised
if there were serious problems with it.

The most likely cause of people seeing different results is
different fonts being installed on the system. Does the
original poster happen to recognise which font was being
used for the rasterisation? The svg specified Bistream Vera
Sans, which will clearly have to be substituted because it
doesn't have much in the way of Unicode stuff.

It's more generally related to CJK characters. This is still
a problem in today SVN

I would like to test this myself but I don't know what font the reporter was using. What font has Japanese characters in Windows?

I checked this on Windows7 (0.47) and Linux (bzr/trunk) with the following Japanese fonts, it seems work fine.

- VL P Gothic (default of most Ja ver. of Linux distro)
- IPA P Gothic (most famous opensource fonts)
- Meiryo (Win7-ja default)
- MS P Gothic (Win7-ja default)

Tested with many common Japanese fonts and appears to be working correctly.
