Thanks for the info, it's very helpful. I think we can maybe
use regular text for ASCII (or even 1252?) and the
"glyphshow" for all other chars. Does this make sense?

As for font embedding, actually we even have a patch for this:

I haven't reviewed the last version of that patch (but I
plan to). It works only for Type1 fonts. If you can review
and/or test the patch it would be very helpful.
