Program Open Error Message - File Problems

When opening the program, I get the following error message:
The preferences file C:\Users\Sarah\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml is not a valid XML document.

I am also having trouble opening just SOME files.

Thanks for the report. Can you attach here the preferences.xml on your system? also one one file with trubles. Once is done maybe you can delete the preferences.xml to generate automaticaly a new one, but please attach it first for reference.

Thank you so much for your reply. This has gotten stranger as I have no folder for c:\Users\Sarah\AppData... Any advice on how to proceed?

Is a hidden folder, not showed until you prefs show it in folder prefs.
Anyway you can put this in the URL of file explorer to go into C:\Users\Sarah\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\

I don't seem to be able to read that file with anything. I'd recommend you rename your preferences.xml file to preferences-bad.xml or something and then try starting Inkscape and opening something.
