Reproduced on Windows XP (32-bit), Inkscape 0.91 and 0.92.x rev. 15044.
The Inkscape process reaches 1.8 Gio of memory consumption and then crashes with the following error message:
----
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
  what(): std::bad_alloc

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → High

The reason for crashing is simply because the file is very large, as seen in the memory crash in comment #2. On my computer it eventually opens correctly, but uses 3.75 GB of memory.

There is general work to reduce memory consumption but this isn't a specific crash bug in and of itself.
