Bug Description

At least when the cursor is away from the panel.

1. Click inside the Layers panel.
2. Move the cursor to the canvas. (without clicking)
3. Type a single-key shortcut such as "s" or "n" to trigger selection mode or node mode.

Expected: I expect the keyboard shortcuts to work as normal.

Result: Instead all keystrokes are captured by the layers panel search function.

What may have seemed like a good idea is, at least for me, an annoyance and a tedium breaking the flow of work. I often for example select some object, then rename or move a layer and then go on to work further on the same selection.

I suggest simply disabling the search or at least provide some separate button or shortcut to trigger the search.
Furthermore, in my experience, it is never needed but still triggered literally 10 times a day.

I hope this can be remedied :)

Thanks

Thanks, su_v : I see the issue was originally reported in 2010. I'd just like to add that this affects every platform on which I use Inkscape: Linux, OSX and Windows.
I think, if this feature was simply disabled, quite a few users would be happier using Inkscape, possibly without even knowing why :).

I'm having exactly the same issue and having the ability to disable the autosearch would be AMAZING!
