Bug Description

From the answers section (https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/287793):

Quoting user wobien (shortened):

Windows 7, Inkscape 0.91,
Installation file: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/3944/Inkscape-0.91-1.exe (32bit)

I used to be able to import an Inkscape .SVG file into another .svg.
I downloaded Inkscape 0.91 r13725 and now I can't any more.

I open an (existing) inkscape .svg file.
I go to the layer where I want to import the other file.
I click file - import, then chose the file I need.

Sometimes the file is imported, but often I get the message (in English): This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's Support team for more information.

And then: An internal error has occured in Inkscape. The program will terminate. Automatic copies of the files will be made on the location .....

Then the program is closed.

I tried it with many files, aand some I can import, but (of course?) the files I need to import (and used to import) don't work.

--------------

It does not crash when copy-pasting the contents - but the user would like to keep the layer structure.
Removing the comment does not help.

I add here a file that makes Inkscape crash when I import it. The file I import into can be anything, it even crashes when I import it into a new empty file I just created with Inkscape.

crash confirmed on Windows 7 (32 bit), Inkscape 0.91 r13725 (Jan 30 2015)

- when I import the file into an empty document I get:
Emergency save activated!
Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now.

- when I Open the file, it appears to load normally, although a significant portion of the drawing is off the page, but perhaps that was deliberate.

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → Confirmed

No crash on Linux Mint 17.3, 64bit, although layers appear to be messed up after import.

Testing on Windows 7 x64:
- Reproduced with release version Inkscape-0.91-1-win32
- Not reproduced with release version Inkscape-0.91-1-win64

- Not reproduced with trunk builds of Inkscape r14691 (win32/win64)

- Not reproduced with 0.91.x stable branch build of Inkscape r13859 (win64)
- Unfortunately I don't have a 0.91.x stable branch build targeting win32 to check right now...

crash not reproduced on Windows XP, Inkscape 0.91+devel r14691 (Mar 6 2016) (32 bit)

-when I Import the file it imports normally, as it also does when I Open the file.
However the scaling of the image is different in the two cases. When I Open the file the scaling appears to be correct, relative to the page size. When I Import the file, the image appears to be smaller, relative to the page size.

Yes, most of the drawing is deliberatly off the page.

So it seems to be fixed in win32/win64 builds of both 0.91.x stable branch and trunk.

@wobien: If you want you can test a development build to give final verification:
https://inkscape.org/download#download-devel

http://download.tuxfamily.org/inkscape/win32/inkscape-0.91.x-13859-win32.7z is a 32-bit build of the current 0.91.x stable branch.

Does the reported crash still reproduce with 32bit builds of latest Inkscape 0.92.0 r15299?
