Bug Description

I have installed the 'hack' font on both my FreeBSD workstation and on my Windows workstation. You can get the font from here: http://sourcefoundry.org/hack/

On both of these, I have inkscape 0.91 installed. On both, if I select the 'hack' font and then attempt to change the size, inkscape stops responding properly. It's not completely unresponsive at this point, but neither is it any longer useful.

Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.91 r13725 on OS X 10.7.5 (default prefs, default new doc, short regular text created with two words, font family changed from 'sans-serif' to 'Hack' (normal, 32pt), with TTF font(s) downloaded from the mentioned site:

Hrm. To be clear, I didn't actually create any text with Hack. I just selected the text tool and then manipulated the dialog.

Not reproduced based on these steps either: the dialog is as responsive as with any other font when changing the font size of the default preview text displayed with the font 'Hack'.

If a dockable/docked dialog hangs, and inkscape as a whole appears to freeze (no buttons clickable anymore) - I'm observing similar issues with all dockable dialogs, possibly related to changing scrollable lists (here e.g. the one titled with 'Style') - try these steps:
1) move the input focus to the canvas (single click on the canvas)
2) zoom in/out (e.g. with keyboard shortcuts '+', '-').
That seems to help in such cases; AFAIU not related/limited to 'Text and Fonts' or an individual font (I initially came across this in the filter editor, as well as in the Glyphs dialog).

Cannot reproduce this with Inkscape 1.0. If this is still an issue, please check the listed bugs here: https://inkscape.org/report
