Bug Description

"My system is in hebrew, but I don't want Inkscape menus to be displayed in hebrew, as it decided to do after installation.
I changed it in preferences to english, but it still showing all the menus from right to left.

I did restart the program, it changed the display language from hebrew to english, but all the menus were in english from right to left (File, Edit, etc)

Right now I solved it by uninstalling and re-installing using the "custom" installation and opting out for all translations, so this time it installed it totally in english.

It's a work around but the default "typical" installation shouldn't cause such troubles."

Edit: user reports that there had been a similar problem with the Gimp.

You said Windows 7 was 64bit, nothing about Inkscape (32bit Inkscape builds run ok on Windows 64bit, and there are reasons some users prefer to use Inkscape's 32bit builds for Windows)

OK, Sorry if it wasn't clear enough.
I always prefer to use 64bit when available

I have same problem and don't wont to reinstall, simply open inkscape-> shift+ctrl+p-> interface-> language(en-GB). Close program and go to C:\Program Files\Inkscape\locale\ delete languages that you don't need, i have just one folder en_GB. Start Inkscape regularly.

Nice workaround hack, however, the bug should still be addressed and eventually fixed.

In a recently fixed issue (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/459914), setting the LANG environment variable was a possible workaround. I wonder if it could fix the issue here.

This issue is known since 0.42 at least so don't get your hopes high about a fix.
Download the installation file, unzip it (7zip), then locate Inkscape-xx>Share>Locale. Delete everything you don't want from there. Now you have a portable version of Inkscape that runs in the language of your choice.

With migration of bugs to Gitlab, closing this bug to track it over at https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues/25

From there, the issue seems to be an upstream design decision, to use the system's locale to set the text direction https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/25#note_139973249

It was also suggested to set LANG to override it (like in #10)
