Bug Description

Binary package hint: inkscape

ill2svg.pl tries to load Image::Magick, however, the libgraphics-magick-perl ships /usr/lib/perl5/Graphics/Magick.pm

(This is on Feisty, but with inkscape from backports which is pretty much the same as in Gutsy. I haven't checked if libgraphics-magick-perl has changed in Gutsy.)

There's also the perlmagick package which ships /usr/lib/perl5/Image/Magick.pm
This seems redundant.

Using inkscape and perlmagick (on Gutsy) seems to work fine.

According to Bryce, the new upstream Inkscape will not use the perl module. I'll leave this bug as a reminder to get rid of the inkscape-related perl module (perlmagick AFAICS) when the new Inkscape lands in Ubuntu.

Still need to make this change in the 0.46 release.

A pre-release of the upcoming Inkscape 0.47 is now available in Ubuntu
Karmic for testing. Because *so* much stuff has changed compared with
the version you reported your bug against, would you mind re-testing
this new version and see if this bug is now resolved?

Karmic Alpha CD ISO images are available at:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If you're not testing Karmic yet, there are .debs of this new Inkscape
for Jaunty, Hardy, and Intrepid here:

  https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.testers/+archive/ppa

You might find further bugs when testing this alpha release. If that is
the case, please file a NEW bug report here:

   https://edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+filebug

Thanks ahead of time for your testing efforts, and enjoy the new Inkscape!

In inkscape 0.47~pre1-0ubuntu2 on karmic alpha 5, ill2svg.pl uses Image::Magick. The ubuntu package recommends perlmagick (not libgraphics-magick-perl)

In Inkscape 0.47.0-1ubuntu2 on lucid alpha3, ill2svg.pl still looks for Image::Magick, but this is now provided by perlmagick. As far as I can see, there is no problem now.

I don't think this is really an upstream problem. If/when inkscape stops using Image::Magick, then it will become an Ubuntu packaging issue to remove the dependency upon perlmagick. I don't think we need a pre-emptive report, though.
