Bug Description

This bug remains in the latest version of Inkscape! Version 0.91 in both 32 bit and 64 bit.

I use Inkscape on two computers. An older Windows XP and a newer Win7 64 bit computer. This bug has prevented me from using the Tiled Clones tool on the XP machine for rotation of clones for a long time and I just ignored it and worked around the problem manually.

Today I tested a new installation of Inkscape on my Win7 machine and it does the same thing. Tiled clones rotate about a point that is way above the document on the page, and there seems no way to adjust it or control it other than to move the object to the apparent rotation point before operating the tiled clone function.

I reinstalled Inkscape on both computers so they both now have version 0.91, and both installations have this identical problem.

Yes, I did, and often do change the default document parameters when opening and operating the program. I tested this operation with several Tiled Clone tutorials, one of which uses 1 Row and multiple Columns, the other specifies multiple Rows and 1 Column. Either process ends up with this same rotation about a point that is off and above the document.

I tried those tutorials multiple times with single lines, boxes, triangles, and other shapes, as objects and paths. The rotation point in the result does not coincide with the object being cloned. The appearance of the results does not match what is shown in tutorials and that gets really frustrating! What else might this be affecting? Is it only rotation of clones? That's a useful tool and I would like it to function correctly.

I do recall some years ago being able to use the 0.48 version (or earlier version???) of Inkscape on my XP machine and having this operation work correctly. I have no idea when it stopped working but I've not attempted to use it again for several years. If I needed rotations, I did them using other functions because the Tiled Clones didn't work with rotations. I really hoped the newest version would fix the problem, but it didn't.

Thanks.

The transform attribute of 'Layer 1' (added when resizing the canvas/page) causes the incorrect calculation of the rotated tiles:

  <g
     inkscape:label="Layer 1"
     inkscape:groupmode="layer"
     id="layer1"
     transform="translate(0,-952.3622)">

Can be triggered for example by a custom default template which has a 'translate()' transformation on the initial layer, or by changing the document's page height (or size) before working with tiled clones.

Bug #168651 will be fixed in future release 0.92 - we'll try our best to backport the solution to upcoming bug-fix release 0.91.1 if feasible.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I'm attaching an image to this email which details the steps involved where in one instance the correct result is obtained, and in the other where it is not. I will see about getting an SVG into the bug report.

Thanks,Larry Berlin

Hello,
Here's an SVG with two layers. When the program opened, I changed the page layout to Landscape, and changed to a custom size in pixels.
Then I attempted to Tile Clone a horizontal line. It did not work correctly. I then added a new layer and with a new object on that layer attempted another clone operation. It DID work correctly.
I went back to the first layer and made more Tiled clones which did NOT work...

Unfortunately, no test case as SVG file was attached - based on the information in the provided illustration (jpeg image), it's sufficiently obvious though that this report is about a known long-standing issue with tiled clones after changing the page height (or after resizing the page to drawing or selection) which is already tracked in bug #168651.

The issue will be fixed in a future release (probably Inkscape 0.92, possibly - if feasible - already in upcoming bug-fix release Inkscape 0.91.1). With Inkscape 0.91 (which is known to be still affected by this bug), the easiest workaround is to create a new layer after having resized the page, then to move the base tile (object) for the tiled clones to the newly created layer, and start anew with creating the tiled clones on that new layer.

While I was writing my earlier comment, a test case as Inkscape SVG file had been provided (many thanks for the extra efforts!) - demonstrating the known issue (as well as the known workaround) already tracked in bug #168651.

Hi, and thanks for your replies and comments! The only reason I posted this as a "new" bug was that despite several searches using known key words, the bug-site did NOT provide correlation to the other bug reports. So I cicked the "new bug" button...   I'm looking forwards to the updated version when this will no longer be an issue. Thanks!   Larry
