Select all should select in child layers

When selecting all in a layer, this works fine to select all the objects in that layer. However, if you want to select all in a layer AND all child layers, you cannot easily select this.

I see two options:
1. Select all should select all features in layer and all child layers
2. Create a option to allow selection in layer and all child layers

The preference is good, but there are two use-cases here: one for selecting just the current layer and one for selecting the current layer and all child layers, hence the request for a keyboard shortcut for both
