Bug Description
Inkscape 0.48 r9939
Windows 7, x64, professional.
16 GB RAM, i7 processor.
Attached 6x6 graphic displays fine in Acrobat AND in Inkscape Import Preview. When actually imported, spaces are replaces with the character "H", open paren with "G" and close paren with "E".
Happens regardless of "font substitution" import option.
If document is subsequently saved as PDF (after import) character change becomes visible in acrobat as well.

Appearance in acrobat (left) vs appearance in InkScape (right), sorry about the scaling issue.
