Bug Description

When writing a compobante I write Mr. / Ms.: ............................. Address .......... at this point ....... inkscape collapses and you have to close, do not let me keep writing, I can be doing wrong or is it a real bug? Thanks, Silverio

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe I have the same problem. While typing, Inkscape becomes unresponsive and must be closed, loosing all unsaved work.
I am running Inkscape 0.48.5 on Lubuntu 14.04 amd_64
I have upgraded the processor on my computer, but everything else works fine so I don't think it is a hardware issue.

Did you file contain only text or was it more complex? If not, it could be related to Bug #1219794 "cpu spikes when editing text in complex SVG files"? (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1219794)

@Eric, please don't update the original description, but add a comment instead next time.

I'm experiencing the same issue. To answer jazzynico (post #2). I have tested this with a newly created file. Added a text-box. Typed some text, using backspace, typing again. And then Inkscape freezes. So, this might still be related to bug #1219794, but it certainly does not have anything to do with the complexity of the file.

Perhaps related: after typing some text sometimes only the even keystrokes are being printed on my screen. Thus, when I try to type "hello world", this appears on my screen: "el ol". What is weird though: sometimes Inkscape freezes after a few characters, sometimes I'm able to type a long piece of text.

What else could I do to debug this?

I feel this still is a bug, but I don't no what it's related to.

likely refer to the issue tracked here (bug #1323061).

The problem tracked here (bug #1323061) seems to affect inkscape on recent Ubuntu flavours installations mostly (e.g. Kubuntu, Lubuntu).

Whether or not the originally reported issue of bug #1257413 (crash with "The program 'inkscape' received an X Window System error.") has the same underlying issue (very likely a conflict with GTK+ input modules) is not known to me.

GIMP seems to be affected by conflicts with GTK+ input modules too (e.g. XIM under KDE). Among the more recent reports are:

I have this same issue and am using Lubuntu 14.04.1 and Inkscape .48 I tried changing In Lubuntu disable ibus under: Preferences -> Language Support -> Input Method ... -> none. This helps when I open a new Inkscape file and try to type, but if I try and type on a file that has an embedded jpeg it still freezes after typing a few words. All other work with the file is fine, drawing lines, adding shapes etc, but as soon as I start typing after about 8 characrters it freezes and I have to restart.

Linda Hanigan (haniganwork) wrote :

I decided to try restarting X-windows to see if it would help. At least the inintial trial with the embeded jpeg allowed me to type 10 lines and a half a dozen text boxes without crashing. So after resetting the Language support - input method be sure to restart X windows. I will be working on altering jpegs of blue prints all day tomorrow. Today I never typed more than 8 characters without it freezing so I'll have a good feeling for if this is a true fix by tomorrow night.

I had the same problem: Inkscape was freezing when I type too fast. I was running Debian Jessie with ibus-gtk version 1.5.9-1 and inkscape 0.48.5-3.

Then I tried to upgrade to version 0.91-4. The result was that Inkscape does not crash anymore, but the typing is very slow and the letters do not arrive in the correct order. For instance, I typed “reconstruction” and the result was “retrcnonosuitc”.

Thanks for your interest in this topic. During this time I went to PCLinuxOS
Debian, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, etc., etc., until arriving to Xubuntu, within which I
am comfortably installed everything for my activities, whether graphics or
music and not to mention internet browsing . Nothing quite right; Moreover I
have to interact with CorelDraw X6 on WinXP installed on the VirtualBox and
Inkscape 0.91r virtual machine without any problem.
The subject of the texts also appears to have solved. As I'm not sure if it
was the operating system or the same Inskcape I can not really judge what
happened.
Therefore I request the closure of the issue for me, agradeciento attention,
keep it up !!
Greetings to all and thanks.

After using Inkscape a lot this week, I noticed that the slow input seems to be related to the complexity of the edited document. On new empty pages, input is instantaneous, and the more I added elements, the more it was hard to edit text.

I also experienced freezes when inputting text in empty pages, so the slowdown of input is not a necessary condition for the freezes.

So far it appears that sacrificing 115 kB of disk space and installing "ibus-gtk" resolves the freezing issue without any side effects.

Could the ibus-gtk package be included in Inkscape's dependencies?

I had exactly the same issue in Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040 and ubuntu 14.10.

Editing or typing text would result in blur window, hanged.

Search Language Support in your Dashboard, then under Language select Keyboard Input method System: none

and system reboot resolved the issue
