Bug Description

Reproduced on 0.48.3 and trunk.
This bug title is quite generic because I'm not sure what is the source of this slowly result.
See svg file attached where a layer named "NRO" contains some drawings.

Try to show/hide this layer or just moving it's content and you will see your CPU dying.

I'm using Win7 64-bits on Intel Core i7 - 8Gb Ram

How is performance on your system after applying 'File > Clean up document'? (It removes 4307 unused defs).

Using "Vaccum Defs" does not improve preformances.

Confirmed on Windows XP, Inkscape trunk revision 12774.
Note that the file is quite big, with 8740 objects, some of them filtered.
Removing the filters seems to improve the situation, but it's still very slow.
