inkscape crashes in trying to load multiple files that worked yesterday

I created several inkscape files over the last three days in preparation for a class.
When I opened one of them today to show to a colleague, inkscape went into some wort of loop.
This was also true for copies of the file I had made, even with a file I emailed to someone.

I reinstalled inkscape, but it still behaved the same way. .

I've sent one of the files. I'm happy to send more if you like.

The version was inkscape-0.48.4-1-win32

Some old files do work, by the way.

I also looked at the document with the microsoft XML notepad tool. It didn't report anything amiss.

Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.4 on OS X 10.7.5
(the attached file opens ok in Inkscape, no loop, no error messages or warnings on the console).

Not reproduced on Windows XP, Inkscape 0.48.4 and trunk revision 12501 with the file attached comment #1. It works as expected and doesn't show anything unusual on the console.
