Bug Description
Bug created from Question #182046 "I would like to know how to draw a rack gear"
---
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a new user of the Inkscape. I would much appreciate it if you could teach me know how to draw a rack gear. I would like to draw a set of gears designed to convert rotary motion to straight-line motion or the other way around. I have figured out how to draw a pinion gear (i.e. Extensions > Render > Gear...) but have no clue how to draw a rack gear.
Many thanks indeed for your time and help.
Best regards,
Kun

Tested (quickly) on Windows XP, Inkscape trunk revision 12312.
It works as expected, but crashes (infinite loop) when spacing is set to 0. Could you please add a low limit in the inx file, and also test the spacing value in the python code in case the script is called from a command line?
We are currently working on the existing gears extension to add new features (see Bug #707290 "Gears extension improvements"). IMHO merging both extensions wouldn't be very user friendly, and thus I suggest we create a new Extension>Gears submenu where we could add the circular and rack gears extensions.

I've committed the extension to trunk (this is what was expected right?) I've also changed the Gear extension so it follows under Render > Gear > Gear ... and Render > Gear > Rack Gear. I added the minimum values for both spacing and length. See r12391.

IMvHO it would have been nice if the new extension features unit support (like the regular 'Gears' extension), useful mainly in technical drawing contexts.
