Bug Description

Popup says "This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way please contact the applications support team for more" - Windows 7. I am only able to work in inkscape for about 15 minutes before I get this aforementioned pop up, I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and I received the message every time I have used the program. Version .48.4

This is happening to me as well, on two different computers. I installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2008, but it still crashes, seemingly without any sort of catalyst or trigger. No matter what I do, it crashes after about ten minutes of use. My laptop has an Intel Pentium(R) dual-core CPU with 2.2 GHz, and 4 GB of RAM, while my desktop has an Intel(R) Xeon CPU with 3.2 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. I am using Windows 7 on my laptop, and Windows XP on my desktop. I have Inkscape 0.48.1 and Inkscape 0.48.4.

These crashes are accompanied by massive amounts of memory usage (1,498 MB).

I also believe that it is somehow related to the JPEGs I am trying to add.

with reference to the following comment:

- what color-depth are you using, 16bit or 32 bit, default is normally 32bit?
- are you using a tablet?
- does it crash if you do not load any jpegs?
- could you run it from a DOS prompt to see if there are any additional error messages generated? A typical DOS session would look like this:

C:\Windows\system32>cd\program files\inkscape
C:\Program Files\Inkscape>inkscape

It is not on a tablet.
It does not crash unless JPEGs are loaded.

I tried running it from a DOS prompt, without success.

I have uninstalled it, and I am unable to reinstall it. It says "error writing uninstall log" and then says:

"Error opening file for writing:

C:\Program Files(86x)\Inkscape\inkscape.exe

Click abort to stop the installation,
retry to try again, or
ignore to skip the file."

If I ignore it or retry, it brings the menu up again without changing. If I abort it, the download stops.

- after uninstalling, you will probably need to entirely delete the Inkscape directory, if it still exists
- you will probably need to run the installation file as an administrator by doing a right click and selecting "Run as administrator".
- I would retry with 48.4, rather than 48.1
- if you are successful in reinstalling, could you attach the jpeg that was causing the problem?

I tried all that. Still nothing.

There is an empty file in the program files folder marked "Inkscape," which I am unable to delete. It keeps saying that I need to have administrator privileges, which I've got.

I ran it on my desktop. I think the problem stems mainly from a combination of "lorem ipsum" text and JPEGs.

I have the same problem. After 5 - 10 minutes Inkscape stops. There is an extra instance in the task bar (just the icon, no text). The "The application has reuested.."pop-up appears, and after OK the Inkscape one.
Runing Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939, 64-bit, Windows 7, AMD Dual-Core E-450, AMD Radon HD320 Graphics. Inkscape has been working OK for several months, only this week I got the error message.
I Uninstalled InkScape and re-installed latest version.
I have not found a specific action that triggers the crash.

I have this problem too on Windows XP. It happens randomly after a few minutes even when I have drawn just a few simple rectangles and scrolled/zoomed around a bit.

I have:

Tried reverting to the previous version but that now shows the same behaviour
Re-installed msvc but it makes no difference
Tried pasting an image into an empty file and saving as mentioned in a similar bug report from 2008 but it doesn't help

I've tried installing an even earlier version, used the install/zip downloads and even the portable version but the problem remains.

There was a Windows XP update a week or so back - I wonder if that might be related as Inkscape was working fine beforehand and never crashed.
