snapping doesn't work anymore with inkscape-0.48.4

I have just upgraded from 0.48.3.1 to 0.48.4 discovering that the snap to grid functionality is not anymore working.

Test case:
1) open a new document
2) verify that a rectangular grid is defined (1px pitch, major lines every 5px)
3) verify the snap settings, I have
  snap to objects: when closer than 20
  snap to grids: always
  snap to guides: when closer than 20
4) verify the snapping is enabled
5) enable the grid (Alt-#)
6) draw a rectangular box (F4)
7) try to move the box just drawn with the mouse, there is no snapping to the grid lines or to objects :-(

I'm running on a Gentoo Linux distribution 64 bit
