18.04 boot hangs on purple screen

Bug Description
Ununtu installed on an Intel Box NUC 7i7BNH
Working fine for 10 days
I had just done an update with to new kernel image.
I booted to a hang on purple screen.
Suspiciously, there was a problem at the login screen
Hit enter with a blank password and then hang at purple screen.
Would not boot of of stick (stick was set first try)
Tried F-2 F-10 and F-12 no change.
Just now; tried F-2 during a boot attempt and Beaver and login screen appeared.
login screen appeared and login appears normal.
