Thank you for taking timein filing the bug to make ubuntu better.
first of all not an empathy bug
second if empathy is running and its status is available than a white dot is also appeared with the status in the indicator..
and more thing as i know its a telepathy indicator bug if the bug is confirmed.

At the moment empathy is closed and there is a white dot next to "logged off". So far, so good. But there is also a white arrow next to "Chat". Is this right? In my opinion this is very confusing, because this would mean that the arrow will never disappear. It will be there when empathy is running and when it isn't. If this isn't a bug in empathy please assign it to the right package.

thank you so far.

Well, it appears that the messaging menu looks at the always on telepathy services and adds a triangle next to it. Not the right thing to happen.

The messaging indicator should find out for itself whether Empathy is logged in or not (or Empathy should report that to the menu), so that the menu can add a "running" flag to it.

still buggy in precise with latest updates.

now the status in messaging menu shows "offline" but my empathy is online and connected.

and when empathy is not running the messaging menu shows correctly "offline" but there is still a triangle next to "chat".

This might be also a telepathy-indicator bug. The triangle is always on while telepathy-indicator is running. If it's not - the messaging menu never shows triangle at the "Chat" item. Even if Empathy is launched and running. Setting "StartupNotify=true" to empathy .desktop launcher doesn't change anything.

Comment #8 is right, this is a bug in telepathy-indicator, not the messaging menu.

Hi,

I confirm this bug, still present in Quantal 12.10 beta 2 : Empathy is showed as running on startup in the Messaging menu even if not launched.

Moreover, the status indicator is set to "Online" (green circle) instead of "Offline" as we are not connected to any chat account (and not visible for our contacts).

Then, when Empathy runs, I can change from Messaging Menu to "Busy", "Absent", "Offline", but not to "Invisible". In Empathy I can select "Invisible" but not immediately : the first time it goes to "Busy", the second is OK but the status indicator stays to "Busy" (see the image). These 2 things occur each time I want to switch to "Invisible" from another status.

When I quit Empathy, status on Me Menu goes well to Offline but the left arrow remains on Empathy in the sub-menu as if it was still running.

summary: - empathy incorrectly shown running in messaging menu
+ Empathy incorrectly shown running in messaging menu and problem with
+ status indicator

Bug still present in Ubuntu Raring: at the system startup, even if Empathy is not launched and if no account is connected, MeMenu shows status as "Available" instead of "Offline".
