not able to change status from offline with pidgin

Bug Description
When pidgin is offline, it is impossible to set another status (eg. available) using the indicator-me applet. This used to work well in the karmic.

I have the same problem but with Empathy. I can correctly change between different statuses, but once set to offline i cannot change back. To get online again i need to open Empathy from the envelope -> chat menu and set the new status there.
